Abstract
In this chapter, we begin with the most basic aspects of R: installing it, checking the installation by demonstrating some of its impressive graphics capabilities, and showing how it can be used as a powerful calculator. We will go well beyond these capabilities in subsequent chapters, but they should demonstrate that R can be a constant presence on your desktop for the kinds of calculations and graphs for which you would otherwise use a handheld graphics calculator or spreadsheet.
