Abstract

This chapter introduces the reasons why we need something in addition to HTML to build most pages. It will then introduce the basics of JavaScript, including:

  • An introduction to the object-oriented approach to scripting, and how to use this in JavaScript

  • Using JavaScript to create dialog boxes and status text

  • Using JavaScript to open, close, and customize browser windows

Crucially, we’ll also take a first practical look at our case study, the award-winning Mondo site by designer Tomasz Jankowski, and sketch out the basic structure of our project, learning a few things about navigation and site planning in the process.
