Abstract

I fell in love with animation while studying illustration at the Rhode Island School of Design. It happened gradually, during Animation 101. Before each class, the lights would go off, and the instructor would screen experimental animations from around the world. Up to that point, I had only seen Disney movies and Saturday morning cartoons, but works by artists like Len Lye and Sally Cruikshank changed en preconceptions. By taking away the conventional narrative storytelling and characters, these animators opened up so many possibilities. I knew that this was what I wanted to do, too. I wanted people to sit in darkened rooms and enjoy a moment that I had made.
