Richard Garriott and his older brother Robert cofounded Origin Systems in 1983 to develop, publish, and market the Ultima series and other products. That series, along with Akalabeth: World of Doom—one of the first role-playing games (RPGs) for the personal computer released in 1979—defined the genre for decades.
