Abstract
Some years ago, I taught a class on administering databases for data warehouses on Oracle entitled “Scaling to Infinity: Partitioning Data Warehouses on Oracle.” I still teach it, and I find it enormously enjoyable because it encompasses topics that I love: how to build very large databases (VLDBs) and how to build them so that loading and querying is almost effortless and natural, no matter how large they become. Moreover, with my good friend Gary Dodge as mentor and primary author, over the years I’ve co-authored two well-regarded but now-obsolete books on data warehousing on Oracle. All of this came as a result of years of building, designing, and managing very large Oracle databases, and I have to say that I couldn’t imagine any job being more challenging and more fun.
