Abstract

There are two types of functions available in SQL Server 2000: built-in and user-defined. Built-in functions are a part of T-SQL, and they are similar in nature to functions you have used in other programming languages. For example, Visual Basic uses the NOW function to return the current system time while T-SQL uses the GETDATE() function to return the same information. User-defined functions,which are new to SQL 2000, are functions you create using the CREATE FUNCTION statement. User-defined functions are covered in detail in Chapter 7.
