Abstract

Understanding the wireless marketplace will help you develop better wireless con tent. Over the past 10 years there has been a dizzying array of technologies, services, and companies, all of which have contributed to today’s wireless landscape. Unlike traditional computing, where a year-old technology can be pitifully obsolete, wireless technology persists for many years after its development because of its high installation cost and relatively low hardware turnover. The technologies behind many of today’s wireless networks were developed as long as 10 years ago. Knowledge of these networks reveals some of the strengths and weaknesses of the wireless Web.
