Abstract
Designing an enterprise SOA is a formidable task. You will need patience, insight, and planning to achieve SOA. In our experience, overenthusiasm is a leading cause for SOA failure—people get excited by the promise of SOA, and then set off to achieve it without a firm understanding of SOA principles or any methodology. Although the tools that can help you to create and manage your SOA are advancing at a rapid pace, these tools cannot provide a substitute for the amount of thinking and effort required to design the SOA itself. Many of the customers we meet are eager to start designing their SOA, but almost immediately get lost in the details. Determining where to start can be a daunting task in itself.
