Abstract

We live in a world of change. Each day we are faced with decisions, and our choices are generally made by “seat of the pants” judgments. This mindset carries over into business as well. Some managers pride themselves on making snap decisions, whether the outcomes are good or bad. In most cases, there exist underlying phenomena at work that cause the variations or changes that require decisions. These phenomena are usually measurable (as attributes or variables). Statistics is the language of variation, and it may be used to analyze these measurable phenomena so that knowledgeable judgments may be made.
