Abstract

Crosstab reports, also known as pivot tables, are a breed unto themselves, and each reporting tool handles them very differently. Likewise, each RDBMS has its own SQL approach for assembling crosstab data. In a similar fashion, each RDBMS has its own OLAP extensions (like SQL Server) or are OLAP databases unto themselves (like the Arbor/Essbase multidimensional OLAP engine that’s also licensed by IBM as DB2’s OLAP engine—see http://www.essbase.com for more information). In this chapter you’ll learn how to assemble, query, and create crosstab data, and how OLAP databases differ from the traditional relational model.
