Abstract

I spent all day in the land that money forgot: Manhattan’s criminal court. For my dreary day of co-mingling with the poor on jury duty, I chose to blend in, with my hair down and clad only in a simple outfit of jeans and a wifebeater. While crammed ass to elbow in the stuffy courts with the personal trainers and social workers and school teachers and of course criminals, I thought: of course I’m not like these impecunious people. But what does really differentiate me from them—besides goals, taste, and lifestyle? The most important gulf between us should really be money itself.
