Understanding the file structure, layout, and purpose will allow you as an SSH administrator to troubleshoot problems more efficiently, and to become a power user of SSH. Oftentimes, a complete configuration of OpenSSH involves setting up the server, client, and several usercontrolled files to create a finely tuned experience for productive users.

OpenSSH provides a highly configurable mechanism to deliver secure communication. As discussed in this chapter, configuring OpenSSH becomes the challenge to supporting an OpenSSH environment. In everyday practice as an OpenSSH administrator, I work with the ssh_config and sshd_config files most often. The next two chapters will take a look at sshd_config and ssh_config in great detail.
