Summary

We have provided a description of Java servlets in this chapter and described the general structure of servlets as well as their usage in generating dynamic responses to web requests. We discussed the different types of HTTP requests available and how a servlet could respond differently to each request.

We also provided information on accessing a servlet. This can be done through either using a form submission or by directly accessing the servlet URL for HTTP GET requests. The processing of responses was also discussed, as well as the configuration of servlets within the web.xml deployment descriptor. In Chapter 15, we will describe how to package, deploy, and debug servlets in a J2EE application server.
