Abstract

It is thought that old age can be seen, fundamentally, as a frame of mind and perhaps older people are acting out society’s expectations of how they should behave. Goffman’s early work on the way we present ourselves in everyday life (Goffman, 1969) came to the conclusion that people act out the roles that are expected of them. As a result the attitude of individuals, communities and society towards older people may influence the way they behave and perhaps even feel. This chapter addresses this idea as central to an understanding of mental health problems commonly seen to occur in this group of people and will outline the range of problems as well as pointing towards ways of addressing them from a person-centred perspective.
