Abstract
Nineteenth-century immigrants to North America came with certain expectations, not the least of which was economic opportunity. Many also came to find freedom and escape from religious persecution. There may also have been some who simply sought adventure. One thing was certain: when their feet landed on North American soil, each newcomer was faced with the challenge of making a living.
