Abstract
Even though the market is tight, there is always a certain amount of job changing that goes on. It used to be that you could reasonably expect to change at least once, that is, from a first job out of graduate school to a second, tenure-track position; or, if you received tenure in the first one, a switch to a place you might prefer. When moving after tenure, it is common to take a leave of absence from your first institution to determine if the new job is good for you. Such leaves must be negotiated with both institutions, so check with colleagues to find out what arrangements are customary in your setting.
