Abstract

Many women find that being “the only” anything (racial/ethnic/ gender group member, lesbian, professor of Coptic and Ugaritic, etc.) can be a very lonely experience in a large or small institution. It is increasingly common as religious studies programs shrink due to budget concerns. Look to the natural allies in women’s studies or African American studies or wherever your interest lies. Seek a worship community or other faith-based group in your area if those ties are important to you. Join professional organizations to keep in touch with colleagues in the field.
