Abstract

When one works for a state university, one is directly faced with the imperatives of the bureaucratic state. Because state legislatures ultimately control funding, the culture of the university may depend on the approach of the legislature. Is this a state that generally supports education, or is it a state that tends to be more suspicious of, or even to downplay, education? What is the role of the state legislature vis-a-vis the education system?
