The situation for faculty and other workers coming from abroad has worsened dramatically since September 11, 2001. Unless asked specifically, one should not volunteer one’s immigration status during the job interview. It is not illegal to discriminate against noncitizens, and, indeed, is increasingly encouraged. Some colleges and universities are informally advising department chairs not to extend job offers to international applicants because of the ensuing immigration complications.
