Illness and disability

  • Mary E. Hunt

Abstract

There is an old Yiddish proverb that loosely translates, “If you want to make God laugh, make plans.” While sometimesunexpected events can be sources of joy, they often come in the form of tragedy: accidents or illnesses that come upon us or members of our family unexpectedly and change our lives. While planning may not be possible in these cases, and we may not want to think about the possibility of tragedy striking, it is good to be aware of your institution’s policies on disability, and to investigate the availability of private disability (and long-term care) insurance as well. It is good to know what your options are, and being prepared in any way you can is a good idea.
