If your institution has a faculty club, consider a membership, and/or if it is automatic, consider using it. The club can be a convenient place to lunch with colleagues, conduct meetings, and hear interesting lectures. Some clubs even have overnight accommodations, a great choice for visiting lecturers or colleagues from other institutions. While some of these places look like wood-paneled men’s clubs, think about joining and using the club with your women colleagues. The atmosphere will be markedly improved by your presence; some of the pretense and old-school tie feel may diminish. On the other hand, if the faculty club is more than you can bear, repair to your favorite coffee/tea/chocolate shop, simply taking your business elsewhere.
