Ethnocentrism is one of the many means by which social hierarchy and domination are maintained. Placing a dominant or ethnic group (in the United States, white/Anglo Americans) at the center—of knowledge, of concern, or of activity—marginalizes other groups and reinforces existing hierarchies.
