Christianity dominates the field of religious studies. That is hegemony. Many jobs are at Christian seminaries or in the departments of religion at church-related schools. Much of the scholarship on various religions is undertaken by Christians who study “other” religions. The majority of members of the AAR are Christian. This Christian hegemony is a reflection of both the historical development of the field of religious studies and the dominance of white Protestant Christianity in American social and cultural life. Thus, all kinds of Christians—African American and Asian Christians, Catholics, Anabaptists, for example may find themselves marginalized by Christian hegemony, even as they may simultaneously enjoy certain of the privileges of Christian affiliation.
