A career in religious studies does not preclude children in a woman’s life. To the contrary, this is a field in which passing on faith and knowledge from generation to generation is an all-important task. It is not easy. Unfortunately, women still usually bear more than their share of child-rearing responsibilities. Having children requires finding ways to balance the needs of young people with the demands of a professional job, accent on the “balance.” However, women in academia have some flexibility in hours. With a supportive partner or other means of support, especially good childcare, women can often manage to raise children and build a successful career.
