Appointments, visiting

Abstract

A visiting professorship can be a nice change of pace, a chance to see if the grass really is greener elsewhere, and an opportunity to work with different colleagues. It is not usually the prelude to a long-term appointment, so do not go with unrealistic expectations. It can also be a hardship: time away from one’s family and usual surroundings, perhaps working in a different language or cultural setting. While many institutions like to have visiting faculty, few know how to welcome and sustain a visitor as part of the community.
