The Society of Biblical Literature ( is the AAR’s sister organization, but its specific focus is, as the name implies, to “advance the public understanding of the Bible and Biblical scholarship.” Scholars in the SBL engage biblical studies in a number of areas, including—but not limited to—literary, historical, sociological, ideological, and textual studies. The SBL plays a role in developing technology, research, publishing, and communication for members, and offers a large number of electronic resources. One of its most important functions is to coordinate the SBL Annual Meeting.
