Professional ethics

  • Mary E. Hunt

Abstract

Professional ethics is a relatively new subspecialty that refers to the many issues we face in the regular course of our work. It includes matters of personal conduct, institutional responsibility, confidentiality, as well as the many aspects of our subspecialties, for example, decisions relevant to research protocols or handling of sources. For women, the trickiest aspects can be matters of personal conduct (see Relationships), where differences of perception, lapses in judgment, and/or cultural prejudices can result in serious problems.
