Abstract
Individuals diagnosed as suffering from schizophrenia can experience high levels of depression and anxiety (Birchwood and Iqbal, 1998). These may be concurrent Axis I disorders, be a consequence of experiencing the trauma of positive symptoms, or relate to issues of loss and social humiliation. The presence of emotional disorder can complicate the presentation of illness, reduce functioning, lower quality of life, and ultimately lead to increased stress levels, which may contribute to the relapse and maintenance of the schizophrenic illness (Wing et al., 1992).
