Abstract

Why the Nature of Schizophrenia Matters to Grass Roots Workers The existence of schizophrenic illness has been asserted by the psychiatric system for only one hundred years or so (Kraepelin, 1896), although it is even more recently, that is, since Bleuler’s work at the early part of the last century (Bleuler, 1911) that the term with which we are now so familiar became favoured over Kraepelin’s original term of ‘dementia praecox’. It may be regarded as a fairly arcane matter to discuss in a practical text book issues such as the nature of schizophrenia, and yet the failure to be clear about the status of this term in a scientific and clinical sense, with the associated controversy and polarisation of opinion among mental health professionals concerning what such a term actually means have been unhelpful to people with ‘schizophrenic’ disorders (Patmore and Weaver, 1990; Wooff et al., 1988).
