  • Veronica Bishop
  • Irene Scott

The aim of this chapter is to introduce the reader to current changes in the National Health Service (NHS) in relation to nursing and to highlight key issues which are further developed in the following chapters. Constant changes in politics and ever-increasing advances in technology have combined to present a greater challenge than ever in meeting the demands of the UK population, which in turn has ever-increasing expectations. The role of evidence-based practice, clinical governance and clinical supervision, as well as research and development in nursing, in terms of the profession’s ability to deliver knowledgeable care, is discussed, the need for support for practitioners being stressed.
