Abstract

Differences in wealth and economic performance between East and West Germany were perhaps the most striking feature to outside observers when the Wall came down. While the success of the West German economy was scarcely in doubt, simplistic platitudes about communism disguise a somewhat more complex picture when examined in detail [see generally 39, 41, 90, 113, 115, 122, 144, 155, 169].
