Abstract

A rational function where f(x) and g(x) are both polynomials can often be easier to work if it is split up into fractions with the factors of g(x) as denominators. For example

$$\frac{{3x + 1}}{{{x^2} + x - 2}}is easier to work with as \frac{4}{{3(x - 1)}} + \frac{5}{{3(x + 2)}}.$$
