Abstract

Why management research? What is distinctive about management, as opposed to other areas of applied social science? Why management rather than business? In this chapter, I intend to draw the boundaries of the discussion: management research specifically, rather than the wider field of business as a whole. ‘Business’ includes a variety of subjects, some of which cross over each other, and most if not all of which in some way contribute to management. The study of management itself, however, contrasts with these other subject areas.
