The protestant Reformation of 1536 can be seen as the first great identity project to be carried out in Denmark. However, the identity project of the reformers did not aim at forming a national identity, but rather a Christian one (this section is largely based on Korsgaard (Ed.) 2005). The basic introduction to this enlightenment project became The Small Catechism, which Martin Luther wrote in 1529. The content of this volume was religiously binding as well as socially normative.
