Cyprus is an island state (9,251 km2) in the eastern Mediterranean. It achieved its independence from Britain in 1960, becoming the Republic of Cyprus. The country was divided de facto in 1974 after the Turkish invasion of the northern part of the island and a solution is still being sought. It has a total population of just over 800,000. Greek and Turkish are the official languages.
