Accretion Disks Before (?) the Main Planet Formation Phase

Protoplanetary disks are the sites of planet formation and therefore one of the foremost targets of future facilities in astronomy. In this review, I will discuss the main options for using JWST and concurrent facilities to study the early, gas-rich, massive phases of protoplanetary disks. We discuss the opportunities to study gas and dust in such disks and to derive constraints on physical and chemical processes taking place there.
