Abstract

Extensive shad egg surveys were carried out as part of the EU Habitats Directive Review of Consents process in the Afon Tywi Special Area of Conservation in 2005 and 2006. Temperature monitoring also investigated the impact of regulated water releases from below a seasonal thermocline in a reservoir in the headwaters of the catchment. Results found that water temperatures were impacted by regulatory releases for a considerable distance downstream. In 2006, when flow and water temperature conditions were more favourable for shad species, spawning distribution was extended to encompass almost the entire protected area of the river. A more comprehensive and consistent survey effort is needed, including juvenile netting, adult shoal runs and egg surveys, before accurate conservation targets can be set for shad species within the Afon Tywi Special Area of Conservation.
