Abstract

The pleurocarpous moss Cryphaea lamyana has a very restricted range in western Europe, which includes seven rivers in Britain. The northernmost population, on the River Teifi in Wales, is statutorily protected as a designated feature of the Afon Teifi Site of Special Scientific Interest. Previous surveys of the Cryphaea colony have given imprecise statements such as “frequent from the bridge to the falls”, making monitoring impossible. A more accurate baseline survey was carried out in 2007, and monitoring targets were set using this survey information. The baseline survey is an example of mapping a distribution on to oblique photographs, using four patch size categories and a small set of other attributes. It could be applied with only slight modification to other bryophyte species that grow in discrete patches.
