Abstract
This concluding chapter is organised in three main sections. First, it presents an overview of the main findings of the book, focusing especially on the differences between countries, but also between programmes and individual institutions. Second, it analyses the driving forces in the development of research, by looking back and discussing the model presented in the introduction. Finally, it frames research in the overall evolution of the higher education system in a comparative perspective and, on this basis, discusses the main open issues and critical choices which are likely to shape the future of research in these institutions.
