Plant Clinics and Phytopathology Training

Summary

In several European countries there has been a decline in the number of students registering for agricultural degrees at MSc level and for public extension service training. As a research topic and in terms of job opportunities, however, phytopathology has expanded to include the more complex aspects of plant health management as well as various areas of biotechnology, environment management and new extension approaches. The available jobs in this area require combining knowledge of upstream biological disciplines with applied ones, particularly in plant health management. To this end, it is very important to build the capacity of students in plant disease diagnosis and in formulating advice for crop protection adapted to particular situations. In view of the constraints in involving students in plant clinic work, at the Université catholique de Louvain (UCL) we developed an interactive Plant Clinic 30-week course, at half a day/week, for up to 15 participants. The participants are final year students in the Integrated Crop Protection MSc programme and the international supplementary MSc programme in Protection of Tropical and Subtropical Crops, co-organised with FSAGx Gembloux and CIRAD-ENSAM, France. The Plant Clinic course ranges from in situ disease detection and evaluation, the application of diagnostic tools, and literature research, to discussions of crop protection strategies. The cases analysed are actual or typical problems provided by the Plant Clinic service or by the students. In this chapter the relationship between the course and the Plant Clinic activities are discussed, and are compared with the North American situation.
