ΣΔmodulators are non-linear feedback systems that enable the implementation of high-resolution analog-to-digital converters using a coarse quantizer. This is possible because the output of the modulator is characterized by low quantization noise power in a narrow bandwidth. A high-resolution Nyquist-rate digital output is obtained after digital filtering and decimation of the modulator output. The basic principles of operation of continuous-time ΣΔ modulators are described in section 3.1.
