Advanced Combustion and Aerothermal Technologies

This article considers world energy trends in use of solid fossil fuels, biomass, IGC cycle, and distributed generation (DG). Analysis of the usage of basic types of gasifiers is carried out and some characteristics of their maintenance are discussed. The dense bed gasifier allows the use of boulders of wet biomass residues providing terms for tar free wood gas. Its basic design and engineering are known, including from the field of blast furnaces, calcining kilns and other shaft units. These factors substantiate the selection of dense bed unit for use in DG. The main problems of biomass usage are underlined: nonordered size and high moisture fraction of the residue and tars in the producer gas. A new concept for obtaining tar free wood gasg is presented. Energetically (adiabatic firing temperature, effective output) and ecologically (Co, NOx, PHC) characteristics of an IC engine supplied by wood gas are discussed. R&D carried out by USTU-UPI are presented, which was aimed at the creation of new gasifiers, pyrolisers and tar-free wood gas technologies.
