Activation of Artificial Ice Nuclei

This paper presents new methods to modify artificial ice nuclei (IN) in order to increase the activity of the latter. Based on theoretical and experimental data we demonstrated that the activity of particles can be essentially changed if hygroscopic compounds are introduced or if the particles are treated with gaseous haloids. Application of complex compounds such as xAgJ–yMeJ increases the efficiency of pyrotechnic mixtures by several orders of magnitude. At the same time, the temperature threshold of aerosol activity is about −5°C.
