The Role of Ions in Condensation Particle Counting for Particle Diameters Below 2 nm

Nucleation and Atmospheric Aerosols

Condensation particle counting for particle diameters below 2 nm may be influenced by the simultaneous presence of ions depending on the experimental procedure. Neutralization of electrostatically classified aerosols by means of a 241Am bipolar diffusion charger causes comparatively high number concentrations of positive and negative ions which enter the measuring chamber simultaneously to the particle species of interest. In this paper we illustrate how the presence of ions influences the measured particle number concentration and how a removal of ions allows to measure number concentration of seed particles correctly.
