Abstract

A fresh attack has been made in the last 15 years on the long-standing problem of the counter-intuitive nature of entrainment in clouds. Experimental and computational studies show that turbulent jets and plumes subjected to off-source heating, simulating latent heat release on condensation of water vapour in a cloud, illuminate many aspects of the fluid dynamics of clouds. The paper presents a review and a critical reanalysis of published results.
