Fred was a 12-year-old pupil who attended a school for children mainly with physical disabilities but who wanted to ‘have a go’ in the mainstream secondary school. His parents, Betty and Ralph, had never wanted him to attend a special school in the first instance but claimed to have been ‘talked into it’ by teaching staff.
