We introduce the magnetic properties of finite-sized one-dimensional (1D) systems in the framework of the Heisenberg model and a superparamagnetic spin block model. We further analyze the experimental observation of short- and long-range ferromagnetic (FM) order in epitaxial 1D Co monatomic chains supported on a Pt substrate. Finally, we discuss changes in the local magnetic moments and anisotropy associated with the low coordination of the magnetic atoms in 1D metallic nanostructures.
