The Timber Assessment Projection System was designed to support forest policy analysis and development in the USA. Its structure and capabilities reflect the historical role that resource projections and forecasts have played over the last century of US forest policy development, the formalized requirements of the 1974 Forest and Rangeland Renewable Resources Planning Act for an assessment process, characteristics of the US forest sector, and shifting management directions on both public and private lands.
