Abstract
Earth Systems Understanding 5 (Table 1, Chapter One), one of the seven basic science understandings that form the foundation of Global Science Literacy, establishes the concept of ‘deep time’ as being important in students’ realization of many modem concepts in science-especially that of organic evolution. Little as been done, however, in the design of curriculum materials to develop the concept nor in conduction research studies to determine how the concept could be more adequately presented to students. In this chapter, I report on research into the understanding of this concept across UK society. Some of this research is published, some is in press and some is currently in train. The chapter ends with a proposal for a Deep Time Framework of Pivotal Geo-events.
