This chapter examines a number of contemporary challenges facing Catholic schools in New Zealand and the Church’s response to these challenges. It will first locate Catholic schools within the context of the New Zealand education system and give a brief account of the two major historical infl uences on Catholic schools as these have a direct infl uence on some of the challenges. The chapter will then discuss two major challenges: The challenge of developing structures to ensure the viability of the schools and the challenge of then using these as a foundation for the evangelisation of contemporary New Zealand.
